Photographer Report: Todd Owyoung

Todd Owyoung
1. Todd Owyoung
2. 19??- Present
3. Todd graduated from Washington University with a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Visual Communications.  His work has appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone, the New YorkTimes, SPIN, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Alternative Press, The Wallstreet Journal, The Boston Globe, The Village Voice, Metal Hammer, and Harper’s Bazaar.
4. Todd mainly does live music photography, band portraits, and tour photography.  Todd is one of the most well-known photographers in the area of concert photography.  He freelances and most of his work appears in music magazines around the world.

5. What initially attracted me to Todd's photos was the fact that I also wish to pursue a career in concert photography.  His photos are awesome, and capture the feel of a live show perfectly.  I feel that what makes his work so great is that he is a fan of the music and takes his time to get to know the bands and how they act onstage and off to get a good shot.

Tilt Shift

Project Description
My theme for this project is Synthesis.  The actual picture taking process was very difficult.  I personally hated this project.  I like how it turned out, though with all the pretty colors and such.  I tried taking the pictures at low or high angles to make the sizing look off.  I think most of the pictures look like crap.  Did I mention I hated this project?
**NOTE: Ignore the white parts around the image.  I don't know what they are, or where they came from...

Quarter 4 Shtuffs

What can Kraus do to improve?
-More time.  You rush us way too much to get projects done.  You say to take our time to get good pictures so our projects can be good, but when you give us a week to get 1 project done, thats never possible to the degree you seem to expect our projects to be at.  Also, more help and explanation.  Most of the time when a question is asked you just direct us to the blog, which doesn't give an adequate explanation, but more skims over the guidelines.  Another thing is instead of super regimented structured projects for us, let us do a free choice type project.  Not all of us are going to ever do 'tilt-shift' type focused photo portfolios.  I, for example, do live concert photography as my main focus.  There is no way to improve that type of photography through the types of projects that you have chosen.  That isn't fair to all the students taking this class.

What can I improve?
-Time management.

What has been successful?
-The pictures?  I think our own personal blogs are a good idea.

Contrast and Texture

Description of Project:
This project was particularly hard for me. I tried to use images that you wouldn't normally think of when associated with that particular word. I also tried very hard to provoke emotion with my pictures. For example, for the 'Liquid' picture I used a picture taken in Florida of a video projected upon water.

Portrait

Description of Project:
For this project I took portraits of my friends, family, and people in their natural environments. Other pictures I tried to experiment with what they WEREN'T like. I used different lighting styles and tried different angles. I tried to capture the subject's personalities in my photos.

Successful Photos

1. smile!.jpg

This picture is successful because of the depth of field used.  Also, I feel the dichotomy of 'smile' and the fact Hayley looks indifferent makes a strong impression.

2. depth11sm.jpg

I feel that this photo is successful because the black and white is striking.  I also feel that the perspective of the railroad tracks add to the overall effect desired.

3.final+5_edited-1.jpg

I think that this photo is successful because of the black and white, and then the use of the bright pink fence/door/thing.  It pops out of the photo and catches the viewer's eye.
